Discovering God's Love in the Midst of Life's Hardest Moments
From Brokenness to Purpose: Discovering God's Love in the Midst of Life's Hardest Moments
Faith Conversations with Sarah Rose | Special Guest: Angeline Lynn Funderburg
What if the very circumstances that nearly broke you became the beginning of discovering who God created you to be?
Sometimes life takes us down roads we never imagined traveling. We experience heartbreak, rejection, fear, and situations that leave us questioning our worth and wondering if things will ever change.
But what if God has been there all along? What if, even in our darkest moments, He has been working behind the scenes, preparing a way forward?
In this powerful episode of Faith Conversations, I had the privilege of sitting down with Angeline Lynn Funderburg, a wife, mother, grandmother, and church administrator at Holy Life Tabernacle in Brookings, South Dakota.
Angeline shared her incredible testimony of overcoming an abusive relationship, rediscovering her identity in Christ, and experiencing the transforming love of a Heavenly Father who never abandoned her.
Her story is a beautiful reminder that your past does not disqualify you from God's purpose, and your circumstances do not determine your future.

A Young Girl Searching for Love and Belonging
Angeline was born in Rosebud, South Dakota, and grew up in the small community of White River. As an only child raised without her biological father actively involved in her life, she often longed for the love and connection of a larger family.
Like many of us, she carried questions about her identity, her worth, and where she belonged.
During the summer before sixth grade, something beautiful happened. While spending time with extended family, Angeline was introduced to Jesus.
She accepted Him as her Lord and Savior and was excited about living her life for Him.
But when she returned home, life continued. The excitement faded, and she eventually found herself walking a different path.
Yet something remarkable remained true.
Even when Angeline wasn't pursuing God, God had not abandoned her.
Years later, she would discover just how faithful He had been.
During our conversation, Angeline recalled a moment when she was praying and praising God in her car. She felt as though she was finally returning to Him, only to sense a powerful reminder in her heart:
"I never left you. I've been here the whole time."
What a beautiful reminder for every one of us.
Sometimes we believe that because we have wandered away from God, He must have wandered away from us.
But Scripture tells us something different.
Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV)
"And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee."
God's faithfulness is not dependent upon our perfection.
He is faithful because that is who He is.
When Life Becomes Unrecognizable
As Angeline grew older, she became a mother and eventually found herself in a relationship that became increasingly unhealthy.
What began as emotional and verbal mistreatment escalated into physical abuse.
She shared how difficult it was to recognize the depth of what she was experiencing while she was living through it.
The criticism, fear, and emotional manipulation had gradually become part of her everyday life.
She had learned to walk on eggshells.
And perhaps the most heartbreaking part was that she didn't fully recognize how much of herself she had lost until she began coming out of that situation.
I think this is something many people can relate to, even if their circumstances look different.
Sometimes we become so accustomed to an environment that we stop recognizing how much it is affecting us.
We begin accepting words that were never meant to define us.
We tolerate circumstances that diminish our confidence.
We begin believing that what we are experiencing is simply the way life must be.
But God never intended for our identity to be determined by another person's mistreatment.
You are not who someone else says you are. You are who God says you are.
The Night Everything Changed
Angeline shared one of the most difficult moments of her life.
During a violent altercation with her boyfriend, she was severely injured. She described feeling trapped, helpless, and afraid that she might lose her life.
In that moment of desperation, she cried out to God.
She had reached the point where she felt she had nothing left.
But Angeline described a powerful spiritual experience. She envisioned arms reaching toward her, and instead of being taken away from the situation, she sensed an instruction to get up and fight for her life.
She understood that her story was not finished.
There was still purpose ahead.
She managed to escape and seek medical attention. Her elbow had been shattered, and the road to physical and emotional recovery would take time.
Looking back, Angeline recognized details that she believes reflected God's protection, including the fact that her car keys were already where she needed them when she escaped.
What initially seemed like coincidence became, in her eyes, evidence of God's presence.
And isn't that often how God works?
Sometimes we don't recognize His hand in a situation until we look back.
We see the doors that opened.
The people who prayed.
The unexpected moments of protection.
The opportunities that appeared when we needed them most.
Angeline's story reminds us that even when we cannot see the full picture, we can continue seeking God.
And for anyone experiencing abuse today, please remember that you deserve safety, support, and protection. Faith and practical help can work together. Seeking assistance and leaving an unsafe situation are not signs of weak faith.
Healing Happened One Mile at a Time
One of my favorite parts of Angeline's testimony was how God began rebuilding her life.
Following her injury, she needed to travel from Brookings to Sioux Falls for medical appointments and therapy.
Those drives became something much more than trips to receive physical treatment.
They became her personal time with God.
Angeline admitted that she didn't particularly enjoy Christian music at first. She didn't always understand the lyrics or connect with the messages.
But she made an intentional decision.
She began listening to Life 96.5, a Christian radio station, during her drives.
She asked God to help her understand the words and recognize Him through the music.
Little by little, something began changing.
She started hearing truth instead of condemnation.
Encouragement instead of criticism.
Hope instead of hopelessness.
She also began listening to biblical teaching from Pastor Greg Laurie and eventually started reading the Gospel of John.
As she immersed herself in God's Word, she began discovering something she had been searching for her entire life.
The unconditional love of her Heavenly Father.
The more she learned about Jesus, the more she began understanding her value.
The more she understood her value, the more her confidence grew.
And the more her confidence grew, the more she recognized that her life had purpose.
Isn't that beautiful?
While her physical arm was healing, God was also working in her heart.
Romans 12:2 (KJV)
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..."
Transformation doesn't always happen in one dramatic moment.
Sometimes it happens one prayer at a time.
One Scripture at a time.
One worship song at a time.
One decision to believe God's truth instead of the lies we've accepted.
Discovering the Love of a Father
Throughout our conversation, Angeline repeatedly returned to one beautiful truth: discovering God as her Father changed how she saw herself.
Growing up without an active relationship with her biological father had left a longing in her heart.
She wanted to know what it felt like to have a father who loved her, protected her, encouraged her, and reminded her of her worth.
Through her relationship with Jesus, she began understanding that she was already deeply loved.
She was a daughter of the Most High God.
She belonged to Him.
One of the Scriptures Angeline shared was Romans 8:15.
Romans 8:15 (KJV)
"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."
During our conversation, we reflected on the word again.
How often do we allow fear to pull us back into the very places God has been leading us out of?
We begin walking in confidence, and suddenly an old thought returns.
You're not good enough.
You can't do that.
Remember who you used to be?
What makes you think God could use someone like you?
But those thoughts do not define our identity in Christ.
We have not been given a spirit of bondage to fear.
We have been welcomed into God's family.
We are His children.
And we can approach Him as our loving Father.
Angeline also shared that she has since developed a relationship with her biological father. Today, they communicate, and she gets to hear words of love and encouragement that she had longed for as a child.
What a beautiful picture of restoration.

God's Plans Were Bigger Than She Imagined
As Angeline continued growing in her faith, her children became part of an unexpected new beginning.
Her oldest daughter attended a children's event at Holy Life Tabernacle and won a bicycle.
But the greatest gift wasn't the bicycle.
It was the love the family experienced at the church.
Her daughter wanted to return.
That simple invitation helped open the door to a deeper connection with the church community.
Angeline began attending, growing in her faith, and volunteering.
During a church event, she met a young man named Randyn Funderburg.
They began talking, building a friendship, and discovering a shared love for Jesus.
Their relationship grew, and they married in 2014.
But the story didn't end there.
Randyn eventually adopted Angeline's three older children.
The woman who had grown up longing for a father's love was now watching her own children experience the love, encouragement, and care of a devoted father.
Today, Angeline and Randyn have four children together in their family, a granddaughter, and a shared calling to serve in ministry.
Randyn serves as lead pastor at Holy Life Tabernacle, and Angeline serves as secretary and administrator.
And while she may have a specific job title, Angeline knows her identity is far greater than the responsibilities listed in her position description.
She is a daughter of God.
She is called.
She has purpose.
And God can use her right where she is.

Your Past Does Not Disqualify Your Purpose
One of the most powerful truths we discussed was how easily we disqualify ourselves because of our past.
We look at the decisions we've made.
The relationships we've experienced.
The mistakes we wish we could undo.
The situations we never imagined surviving.
And we begin believing that God could never use someone with our history.
But that simply isn't true.
God doesn't require a perfect past to create a purposeful future.
Angeline shared Romans 8:28:
Romans 8:28 (KJV)
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
Notice that Scripture doesn't say all things are good.
It says God can work all things together for good.
That distinction matters.
The abuse Angeline experienced was not good.
The fear, pain, and suffering were not good.
But through her healing and restoration, God has brought new opportunities for her to encourage others.
Her testimony can now bring hope to women who may feel trapped, forgotten, or unworthy.
Her experiences have given her compassion for people walking through difficult circumstances.
Her story has become an opportunity to point others toward Jesus.
And that's something we should never overlook.
The very place where you experienced your greatest pain may become a place from which you offer someone else hope.
One Decision Can Change Generations
Toward the end of our conversation, I was reminded of something incredibly important.
Angeline's decision to seek a different future wasn't only about her.
It also affected her children.
And potentially their children.
And the people each of them will encounter throughout their lives.
Sometimes we underestimate the impact of one decision.
One decision to seek help.
One decision to pursue Jesus.
One decision to believe we are worthy of love.
One decision to step forward, even when the future is uncertain.
We may never fully understand how those decisions affect generations to come.
But our lives are connected to other lives.
Our purpose is bigger than ourselves.
And when we allow God to transform us, that transformation can extend far beyond what we can see today.
A Message for Anyone Who Feels Broken
Maybe you're reading Angeline's story and recognizing pieces of your own.
Maybe you've been in a relationship that left you questioning your worth.
Maybe you've made decisions you're ashamed of.
Maybe you've walked away from God and wonder whether He would welcome you back.
Or perhaps you simply feel stuck, afraid, or uncertain about what comes next.
I want to remind you of something.
God has not given up on you.
You are not too far gone.
You are not beyond His love.
Your story is not finished.
You do not have to become perfect before coming to Jesus.
You simply need to come to Him.
He sees you.
He loves you.
And He invites you into a relationship that can transform your life from the inside out.
As Angeline encouraged listeners during our conversation, continue building yourself up through God's Word. Learn who He is. Learn what He says about you. Spend time in His presence.
And remember that He is for you, not against you.
A Prayer for Healing, Freedom, and New Beginnings
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being a God who never leaves us or forsakes us.
Thank You for loving us even when we have wandered away, made mistakes, or found ourselves in circumstances we never imagined.
Lord, I pray for every person reading this today who feels broken, afraid, forgotten, or unworthy.
Remind them that their past does not determine their future.
Help them recognize the truth of who they are in You.
Where there has been fear, bring courage.
Where there has been rejection, reveal Your unconditional love.
Where there has been shame, bring freedom.
Where there has been brokenness, begin Your healing work.
Lord, give those in unsafe circumstances wisdom, protection, and the support they need to find safety.
Help each of us release the burdens we've been carrying and trust You with the journey ahead.
Thank You that You are still writing our stories.
Thank You that You have created us with purpose.
And thank You that through Jesus Christ, we can become truly Fearlessly Unshackled.
In Jesus' mighty name,
Amen.
